CityU Academy for Seniors partners with community organisations to host six financial planning talks for 233 seniors

To strengthen Macao seniors’ knowledge and management of personal finances, the Academy for Seniors of City University of Macau organised six “Financial Planning for Seniors” talks between July and August 2026 in collaboration with multiple community organisations. Around 233 seniors took part. Through the university platform, the programme helped older adults acquire practical retirement financial planning skills and face retirement with greater confidence.

With Macao’s accelerating population ageing and longer life expectancy, seniors need longer-term financial planning. The Academy worked with community partners to turn policy-level economic security into everyday money-management skills. Sessions were held at the Yi Jun Centre of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, the Taipa and Macao Song Bai Homes of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, the Yan Fai Elderly Comprehensive Service Centre of Caritas Macau, the Yi Kang Centre of the Macao Federation of Women’s Associations, and Sin Meng Charity Association. A lecturer from the university’s Faculty of Business delivered the talks in an accessible style. Topics included effective strategies for using retirement funds, arranging emergency reserves, common financial risks in daily life, and popular scams involving finance, investment and insurance. Participants also learned how to build financial buffers against unexpected medical costs, recognise traps such as over-investment and reckless borrowing, and identify typical tactics used in phone fraud, fake investment schemes and insurance scams. The goal was to raise self-protection awareness and risk-identification ability so seniors can manage their personal finances more securely and steadily in retirement.
